CABE’s role is to work for a higher quality of life for people and communities across England, with particular concern for those living in deprived areas. It does this by making the case for change, gathering hard evidence, providing education
opportunities and direct help on individual programmes and projects. It motivates those responsible for providing our buildings and spaces to design and develop well. The public can contact CABE about buildings and design in their area. CABE also funds small education and access projects across the country to enable young people to be involved in discussion about the built environment. In Hackney CABE is funding The Building Exploratory – an interactive exhibition exploring buildings and the built environment. It is the first education and resource centre in the UK to do this. The Building Exploratory is unique in that many of the exhibits are made through art projects with local people. Each year 70% of Hackney Schools take part in its education and arts programmes, and thousands of local residents join workshops and public tours.
